The re-opening of cinemas in England from July 4 will increase the case for fans to be allowed back into Celtic Park when the new season kicks off.

At Westminster today UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a raft of changes to social distancing that will come into effect on July 4.

The key change is to reduce social distancing to 1 metre which makes the hospitality sector viable with new safety regulations in place. Beer gardens will re-open but the decision on cinemas makes it almost impossible to keep football grounds closed.

Every announcement has stressed the difference between indoors and outdoors with a football stadium far healthier than an enclosed cinema.

Even allowing for every second row being closed alongside seats available in blocks of two a cinema is still an enclosed space with just one or two exits. In contrast football grounds are open air with multiple exits.

Celtic have been heavily involved in talks with the Scottish Government which has tended to cautiously lag a few weeks behind Westminster.

With the daily death rates in Scotland down to single figures and often zero it shouldn’t be too much to expect crowds of 10-15,000 inside Celtic Park for the start of the new season on August 1.
