Alex Rae believes that Lille will need to spend close to £20m to sign Alfredo Morelos.
Last November he predicted fresh investment to fund Steven Gerrard’s January war-chest.
On Sunday excitement and fear swept through Ibrox fans as they anticipated the first ever offer for their star striker coupled with the loss of their main goal threat to stop Celtic winning 10-in-a-row.
Last night the usual Ibrox messengers revealed that no bid had been made but that the club was braced for an offer from the French club with money to burn.
Since news that the player had agreed terms emerged there has been no follow up. Not a mention of Morelos from France, no need for anyone to brace themselves for a bid.
Gerrard must get on with preparing for Saturday’s match at Aberdeen without Jermain Defoe and further question marks over Morelos playing against a club that he has twice been sent off against.
With pay-roll to be met on Thursday and instalments due for Ryan Kent and Filip Helander cash is in short supply at Ibrox.
Rae might be expecting £20m but an undisclosed fee of half that amount would be welcome at Ibrox with August likely to involve the return of Sports Direct and more legal costs.
