Celtic have had a bid for Ivan Toney turned down by Peterborough.

The League One club enjoy making their transfer negotiations public with CEO Darragh MacAnthony and Director of Football Barry Fry keen to provide updates as they attempt to drive up the price for their top scorer from last season.

At tea time yesterday MacAnthony tweeted about an offer from a Scottish club, overnight Fry spoke to the Daily Mail about Celtic’s interest.

Picking up on the Daily Mail interview, The Sun reports:

We received a bid for Ivan from Celtic on Friday and we turned them down flat. What’s it going to take to get him? It will take a lot more than Celtic offered. It’s their first bid, so I don’t know, they might come back.

I know Celtic are after another striker down here as well but if we keep Toney and get to the Championship that’s worth £12.5m to us. I’ve told the lad that.

Brentford have been strongly linked with Toney but won’t make any move until their involvement in the EPL Play Off is completed, tonight they attempt to turn around a 1-0 deficit from their first leg semi-final defeat at Swansea.

Despite being impressed by Leigh Griffiths and Patryk Klimala during the 3-1 win over Hibs Neil Lennon is looking for another striker for his squad.

Following the winter break the hoops boss went with two strikers up front as he watched his side pick up 28 out of 30 points and reach the semi-final of the Scottish Cup.

Odsonne Edouard is clearly the first choice striker but with doubts remaining over Klimala and Griffiths signing Toney or West Ham’s Albian Ajeti would provide cover for Edouard and another option for a front two.

Vasilios Barkas is in Glasgow and expected to formalise his transfer from AEK Athens over the next 48 hours.
