Leigh Griffiths won’t be included in the Celtic squad that travels to France for three matches next week.
The striker is reported to have returned for pre-season training out of condition. Since Celtic resumed pre-season training on June 11 the fitness issue is a serious concern.
Throughout 2019 there were regular social media reports predicting Griffiths’ demise but after the winter break he played a lead role in Celtic title success, scoring a hat-trick in the final match of the season, a 5-0 home win over St Mirren.
Neil Lennon took extra pride in restoring Griffiths to first team action but tonight The Sun reports a Celtic statement saying:
Leigh is undertaking his own fitness programme along with some other players at Lennoxtown. He will team up with the squad when they return from France.
Odsonne Edouard will again resume the role of Celtic’s lead striker with the spotlight on Patryk Klimala and Vakoun Bayo to make a breakthouh.
Celtic face Nice, Lyon and Paris Saint Germain between July 16 and 21 with no further matches scheduled before the SPFL opener on August 2 at home to Hamilton Accies.
