Celtic have been linked with an interest in Dejan Ljubicic of Rapid Vienna.

The 22-year-old has mainly played as a defensive midfielder but has also been used in central defence.

Last summer Celtic signed Boli Bolingoli from Rapid Vienna which demonstrates that the Austrian market is one that the hoops can compete in.

For some time Celtic have been looking for a future Scott Brown type of player but as Eboue Kouassi and others have discovered the club captain shows no sign of taking a back seat with his role as important as at any time in his 13 years of service.

Ljubicic was expected to join Chicago Fire in January but opted out of a move to the MLS and has been attracting attention since the Austrian season resumed last month.

The Daily Mail reports:

Promotion-chasing Brentford are renowned for finding bargains, bringing in the likes of Said Benrahma and Bryan Mbeumo in the past, and will evaluate Ljubicic over the coming weeks.

Southampton, Celtic and Rangers have also discussed the 6ft 2ins Austrian who is being touted for a call-up to the senior national side but there is also interest from clubs in Germany and Russia.

Brentford’s scouting operation is held up as one of the best in the business but at this moment Celtic aren’t short of midfield options. As well as the established first choice options Kerr McInroy, Scott Robertson and Luca Connell are waiting for a chance to impress.

Central defence is an area that would appear to be more of a priority as Celtic fans wait for the first signing of the summer.

Ljubicic scored the only goal of the game in December 2018 as Rapid dumped Steven Gerrard’s side out of the Europa League. He has one year left on his Rapid contract.
