The Betfred Cup is ready to return in October-giving Celtic the chance to go for a fifth successive win.

Jock Stein’s side achieved that in the late sixties with the current side looking to match that record haul and stretch their run of domestic trophy wins to 12.

Over the last four years the Betfred Cup has started with groups of five in July to give clubs four competitive matches ahead of the league season.

Scotland’s European representatives have been left out of the group stage with the SPFL canvassing all clubs over whether they are willing to play group matches ahead of the lower divisions starting on October 17.

The format will be dependent on numbers with all 12 Premiership clubs  likely to be placed in the last16 leaving just four places open to the lower leagues.

The Daily Record reports:

Scotland’s clubs have been asked to give a show of hands in a bid to get the Betfred Cup up and running in October.

Record Sport understands the SPFL has written to all 42 clubs – as well as Lowland and Highland League champs Kelty Hearts and Brora Rangers – to discover how many of them want to take part in the first major cup competition of the new campaign.

The first round group stage had originally been scheduled for this month but those plans had to be scrapped during lockdown.

But last week the top flight secured government approval to kick-off as planned on August 1 – and now league bosses want to nail down an October 6 start date for the rejigged cup campaign.

When football went into Lockdown it seemed that the League Cup would be a casualty but with Betfred sponsoring and television coverage through Premier Sport it is set to continue.

Since May 2017 all three domestic trophies have been held by Celtic, the SFA are still looking for dates to complete the 2020 Scottish Cup.
