Bristol City are still hoping to lure Steven Gerrard to their vacant manager’s job.

Lee Johnson was the first manager to be sacked in The Championship following Lockdown with club owner Stephen Lansdown taking his time to come up with a replacement.

Chris Hughton was the early favourite for the job but despite the ready availability of the former Brighton boss it seems that no moves have been made to take him to Ashton Gate.

Lansdown is a genuine billionaire with the appeal of having one of England’s Golden Generation in charge of his club clearly having great appeal.

Bristol Live reports:

Bristol City are being prudent as they look to find a new head coach but time is ticking as the end of the season arrives, the start of the new transfer window and plans for the 2020/21 campaign need approving.

Bristol Live has learned that, contrary to a report in the Sunday Express, Steven Gerrard hasn’t categorically turned down the opportunity to succeed Lee Johnson and remains the club’s No1 target, with the board retaining confidence that he can be tempted south.

It was reported by Talksport on Friday that Gerrard has no intention of leaving Ibrox, but according to our sources, the chase is not over yet and CEO Mark Ashton still hopes to entice the Liverpool icon to BS3.

After nearly winning the League Cup in December Gerrard signed a new Ibrox contract keeping him at the club until June 2023.

Since losing last season’s SPFL title to Celtic Gerrard has only added Jon McLaughlin and Calvin Bassey to his squad with little sign of a war-chest to stop the hoops making it 10-in-a-row.
