Defoe makes incredible No 1 in Europe claim

Jermain Defoe has claimed that his Ibrox team-mates are the best side in Europe at keeping the ball.

The Ibrox spin machine is notorious for hyping up everything possible but they’ve stopped short of claiming to be the best on the continent.

Defoe arrived at Ibrox in January 2019 to the usual noises but after 18 months of failure he seems determined to talk up the achievements of Steven Gerrard’s flops.

Picking up on the podcast the Daily Record reports Defoe saying:

In terms of keeping the ball we might be No.1 in Europe. The players need to take a lot from that because we are talking about Europe against some top teams, like Porto. We just need to bring that in the league because it is a massive season for us

In their last match before the suspension of football Bayer Leverkusen handed out a footballing and goal scoring lesson at Ibrox.

Prior to that lesson Defoe was a member of the best ball keeping team in Europe that lost back-to-back matches against Hearts and Hamilton.

Over the 10 SPFL matches played following the winter break Defoe’s team mates picked up 17 points while Celtic collected 28 out of 30 despite visits to Motherwell, Aberdeen, Livingston and St Johnstone who finished 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th in the Premiership table.
