Chris Sutton knows the script so well. The longer that there is no football the greater the noise from Ibrox.

For four years it has been a constant. Mark Warburton and Joey Barton started the ball rolling, Pedro Caixinha kept it going with humility by-passed.

When Sutton joined Celtic in July 2000 it was a club that had trailed 21 points behind Dick Advocaat’s champions the previous season. Time and time again the message from Martin O’Neill was that Rangers were the benchmark, even when Celtic had won the opening derby 6-2 and established a 15 point lead.

That sort of thinking seems to have escaped Jermain Defoe.

The former England striker moved to Ibrox in January 2019 and has failed to stop Celtic’s winning run.

At the turn of the year there was just two points between the two Glasgow teams but when the season was suspended, 10 matches later, the gap had been stretched to 13 points.

Last season Celtic won two of the three derby matches.
