James Tavernier has been backed to continue as Ibrox captain.

The defender joined the Warburton Revolution in 2015, so far he only has one Petrofac Cup winners medal to show for his efforts.

Graeme Murty handed the armband of dignity to Tav in 2018 with Steven Gerrard standing by that decision when he switched Anfield for Murray Park.

Last season brought the usual catalogue of howlers from the former Wigan utility man with his dodgy back-pass against Hearts at Tynecastle at the end of February bringing an end to the Scottish Cup campaign.

Tav’s leadership qualities were called into question during the League Cup Final, when Willie Collum awarded a penalty, he handed the ball to Alfredo Morelos whose nightmare continued when Fraser Forster saved his effort from 12 yards out.

Discussing the armband McAllister told the Daily Record:

We trust the captain. He plays a massive part in that and I like that he takes on that responsibility. We do ask him to go and go and over the piece he’s a good captain.

He’s available the entire time. He’s set some very high standards in terms of goalscoring and assists. You look at his numbers and what he provides for us and he’s a key player

Matt Polster, Tav’s understudy is close to completing a transfer to Chicago Fire.

Since the season ended Steven Gerrard’s squad has lost Andy Halliday, Wes Foderingham, Jordan Rossiter, Flo Kamberi, Sheyi Ojo and Jake Hastie with just Jon McLaughlin and Calvin Bassey joining the club.
