Steven Gerrard has swooped to bring free agent Leon Balogun to Ibrox on a one year deal.

The 32-year-old was released by Brighton and picked up one cap for Nigeria in 2014 during a career that could generously be described as mediocre. It seems that the war-chest of recent seasons has been emptied.

Balogun has been brought in as cover for Nikola Katic who will be out for the foreseeable future while fellow defender Filip Helander has yet to appear in any pre-season fixtures.

With Jon McLaughlin and Calvin Bassey also out of contract Gerrard has added three squad fillers without paying out on transfer fees.

Balogun spent most of his career with German Second Division sides before joining Brighton two years ago. During his stay at the Premiership side he started five league games before playing 11 times on loan for Wigan.

Over the next few days various incredible comparisons will be dug out about the Ibrox new boy, all including mention of the fact that he is a Nigerian internationalist.
