A report in The Express has claimed that Steven Gerrard is a managerial target for Bristol City.

Lockdown put the managerial Merry Go Round on hold but soon after The Championship got underway Lee Johnson was sacked as Bristol boss.

Chris Hughton was quickly installed as the favourite to take over at Ashton Gate but the Championship side seem to be in no rush to make an appointment with Gerrard flagged up as a candidate late on Saturday night.

Two seasons in Celtic’s wake is balanced up by progress in the Europa League with the kudos of being from the Golden Generation still carrying influence among English club owners.

The Express reports:

Steven Gerrard has emerged as a shock target for Bristol City’s ambitious billionaire owner Steve Lansdown.

Lansdown is looking for a new boss for his Championship outfit after sacking Lee Johnson last weekend following a run of nine games without a win.

He has drawn up a shortlist that includes Liverpool legend Gerrard, 40, who has spent the last two years in charge of Rangers in Scotland.

Former Brighton boss Chris Hughton, Charlton’s Lee Bowyer and Plymouth Argyle’s Ryan Lowe are also in the frame.

But Lansdown believes that Gerrard is the man to fulfil his ambition of mounting a bid to win promotion to the Premier League next season.

Normally there would be some sort of denial from ‘sources close to Ibrox’ but so far the story has been avoided.

The Express is part of the Reach Group that also includes the Daily Record but the Glasgow based publisher hasn’t touched the Bristol City story.

In December 2019 Gerrard signed a new Ibrox contract, keeping him at the company until June 2023.
