Vasilis Barkas was in at the sharp end today as he took part in training for the first time at Lennoxtown.

Celtic’s £4.5m keeper was introduced to his new team-mates and most importantly came under the guidance of Stevie Woods who has become one of the most significant members of the backroom staff.

The former Motherwell keeper has been credited with taking Fraser Forster’s game to new heights while his work with Craig Gordon brought him back to top form after almost three years out of football.

At his lunchtime media conference Neil Lennon confirmed that Barkas is now his first choice keeper putting Scott Bain back into the position of understudy.

The loss of Gordon and Forster at the same time created a problem for the Celtic boss but with an initial payment of £4.5m that issue appears to be resolved.

After four years at AEK Athens, with experience of international and Champions League football, Barkas has the perfect pedigree to go straight into the Celtic side with the first European tie just over a fortnight away.

The arrival of the new keeper will allow Ross Doohan to move on loan to Ross County after playing for the Highland side as a trialist against Celtic last Sunday.
