Scott Brown on the trust issue

Scott Brown has complete trust in Scott Bain.

The former Dundee keeper was one of three options that Neil Lennon had as recently as March but now finds himself as the only goalie at the club with top team experience.

Conor Hazard and Ross Doohan have played out on loan in The Championship but need a season of regular football in the top flight to advance their claims.

Bain has did little wrong in a Celtic shirt but wasn’t at his best when losing at home to Cluj last August with Fraser Forster recruited soon after.

The on loan Southampton keeper made a huge impact at Celtic but equally leaves a significant gap to be filled.

Whatever the era the biggest test for any Celtic player is having the nerve as well as the ability to perform at Ibrox. Bain came through that with Honours in March 2018 with his captain in no doubt about the character and calibre of the man currently wearing the gloves.

Brown told The Sun:

We’d trust Bainy to do the business, definitely. He came in and was brilliant for us when he arrived. He was chucked in at the deep end at Ibrox. Dorus de Vries got injured the day before and Bainy went straight in and he saved us that day, to be honest.

He kicked on from there and he was fantastic for us in that run-in — as he has been whenever he’s been asked to play. Bainy never lets anyone down and I’m sure he’ll step up if he plays this week, the next or whenever. It’s not like he lost his place.

He injured his finger — you know what goalies are like with their fingers — and that was why he wasn’t in the team. That’s how it is with keepers, only one can play. But he’s always worked hard in training and been ready whenever the call has come.

He’s a top goalkeeper, he is very composed with the ball at his feet and he’s a shot stopper. Bainy’s a good one to have, and if he starts the season then I’m sure the lads would be delighted with that. I’m sure he will be pushing himself regardless of whether someone else comes in or not to try to focus on getting that No 1 jersey.

Despite speculation over David Marshall and Joe Hart joining Celtic, with two weeks to go until the season starts there appears to have been no significant moves to bring in a new keeper.
