Ally McCoist has branded Leigh Griffiths a disgrace for missing out on much of Celtic’s pre-season build up.
Neil Lennon was almost as scathing when he spoke out after Celtic’s first pre-season match when the team drew 1-1 with Nice.
At that time Griffiths was training at Lennoxtown with Lennon impressed enough by his application to give the striker a 30 minute run out in the 3-1 win over Hibs.
As a manager McCoist signed Kevin Kyle- who was never described as lean- on a two year contract but covering his appearance on BT Sport last night The Sun reports McCoist hitting out at Griffiths:
I think, again, not for the first time, he’s let himself down, the Celtic fans down and most importantly the man who’s stood by him, he’s let Neil Lennon down. He just absolutely baffles me that wee man.
That wee man should be scoring goals for Celtic and playing in the Scotland team. I don’t know if he doesn’t get it or whatever, I just don’t understand it.
I just think it’s a disgrace the way he came back, and he wasn’t in a fit enough state to go with the rest of his team mates to France.
With nine substitutes allowed to be named Griffiths is likely to be on the bench for tomorrow’s SPFL opener at home to Hamilton Accies.
Lennon signed Griffiths from Wolves in 2014. Despite being written off at times by Ronny Deila and Brendan Rodgers the 29-year-old has scored more top flight goals than anyone else currently playing in the Scottish game.
