Celtic crashed out of the Champions League tonight, losing 2-1 to Ferencvaros on home soil.

Despite being seeded and having a home match to advance it proved too much for Neil Lennon’s side as the club missed out on reaching the group phase for the third season running.

Under Ronnie Deila Celtic lost out in the Play Off round to Maribor and Malmo, over the last two seasons it was the third round that they fell by the wayside with tonight a new low.

Summing up the feelings of most Celtic fans Chris Sutton reached out to Twitter.

With Odsonne Edouard booted out of contention by Dundee United assisted by Andrew Dallas there was a lack of shape to the home side that was amplified by a seventh minute opener from Siger.

In the 53rd minute a deflected shot from Ryan Christie levelled the scores but in the 75th minute Chol Nguen raced clear of Hatem Abd Elhamed to shoot low past Vasilis Barkas.

Albian Ajeti was thrown on to salvage the match but despite five minutes stoppage time Celtic crashed out leaving questions about every aspect of their build up and transfer activity over the last 12 months.

January signings Ismaila Soro and Patryk Klimala watched from the bench as the post mortem begins on another early Champions League exit.
