Steven Gerrard has admitted that Alfredo Morelos has had his head turned by transfer speculation.
For two and a half years baseless stories have linked the striker with a variety of moves across the world without a meaningful offer arriving at Ibrox.
Morelos put in a pointless 75 minutes sweating away in Leverkusen as his side’s interest in the Europa League was ended on a 4-1 aggregate.
On the back of one tweet from a French journalist Lille are poised to bid/ready to swoop/ considering an offer but there is nothing in the striker’s 2020 form that would attract any kind of bid.
There was no contact between Gerrard and Morelos when he was substituted with 15 minutes left to play with the striker a continuing source of frustration for his manager.
Covering his interview with BT Sport, The Sun reports Gerrard saying:
Everyone knows Alfredo has had his head turned for sure – there is no denying that. We move forward and my focus is on the team and players who want to be here.
My focus is on St Mirren. If a bid comes that the board likes and the player tells me face to face that he wants to go then we’ll see what happens.
Alfredo is professional enough to try to block the noise out and focus. He hasn’t had the best of games but we haven’t as a team either. We all have to improve. There is no finger-pointing on anyone’s performance but Alfredo needs to remain focused.
Morelos has scored one goal in 2020, an 87th minute strike against Hamilton in a 4-1 Scottish Cup win. Three weeks later Accies won 1-0 at Ibrox with the Colombian firing blanks.
