Neil Lennon has revealed that an ankle injury ruled Leigh Griffiths out of Celtic’s 5-1 win over Hamilton Accies.

The striker missed out on most of Celtic’s pre-season work but impressed during a 30-minute appearance against Hibs on Monday.

Griffiths created two goals for Patryk Klimala but failed to make the expanded nine-man bench for the SPFL opener against Hamilton.

On their live matchday blog (16.13), BBC Scotland reported on Lennon’s pre-match interview:

On Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths’ absence from the match-day squad, Celtic manager Lennon says: “He would’ve been in the squad, but he rolled his ankle yesterday. He’s going to do a little bit of rehab over the next couple of days, but he should be okay for [next] weekend.”

Odsonne Edouard and Klimala shared four of the five goals against Hamilton that lifted Celtic into top spot on the first weekend of the season.

Next Sunday Celtic are away to Kilmarnock at a ground which has caused the club some problems over the last couple of seasons.

In January Griffiths scored at Rugby Park before aiming his celebrations at Sky Sports co-commentator Kris Boyd, getting on the bench for Sunday’s match would be a step forward for the striker who turns 30 later this month.
