Darragh MacAnthony is still trying to draw Celtic into an improved offer for Ivan Toney even though the hoops are close to signing Albian Ajeti.

The Peterborough CEO has never been shy to promote and punt his players with the striker now into the final year of his contract.

Brentford were reported to be keen on signing Toney but more than a week after missing out on a Premiership place to Fulham they haven’t made any move.

MacAnthony and Barry Fry have regularly name-checked Celtic but with Ajeti close to signing for £5m there is virtually no chance of Celtic sanctioning a larger offer for a third tier striker.

Tonight The Sun reports MacAnthony saying:

I love the way fans come on Twitter and tell you the value of your players. I’ve had Celtic fans telling me we shouldn’t be charging that for a League One player – yet they want that League One player.

There are Premier League clubs trying to buy him and they were quoting £5 million. We agreed a deal of a lot more for him and he was given permission to talk. So far nothing has happened.

There are other clubs negotiating to buy him. We’re very comfortable about it. I’ve got two partners who are very wealthy so I’m very lucky.

This joke on Twitter that he’s not worth this or that – well he’s what we feel he’s worth. If that means we say he’s going to play the year out with us and we win promotion then happy days.

We do our transfer business methodically. Myself and Barry Fry don’t have our pants pulled down. We’re like the Mounties – we always get our man and we always get the figure for our man but right now he’s with us and Posh fans might even see him play on Saturday. We’re very relaxed.

Ajeti will be Celtic’s first outfield signing of the transfer window with Neil Lennon making a new striker to ease the burden on Odsonne Edouard a priority.

Fry claimed that Toney had stated a preference to join Celtic, in January he will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement as a free agent.
