Jozo Simunovic is reported to have agreed a deal to join Turkish side Trabzonspor.

The 26-year-old was released at the end of his Celtic contract in May with the club passing up the option of a 12 month extension. Trabzonspor finished last season in second place in the Turkish league

Peter Lawwell oversaw the signing of Simunovic at the same time as Virgil van Dijk was being transferred to Southampton.

Despite an impressive pedigree, injuries hampered the defender from the moment he joined Celtic, a year after moving to Scotland he flew to Italy to discuss a move to Torino which broke down due to injury concerns.

Although he was a regular in the squads of Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon it was no great surprise when he was released at the end of last season.

Trtspor of Turkey reports:

Trabzonspor strengthens the defence line. Burgundy blues agreed with Croatian stopper Jozo Simunovic on all issues. The 26-year-old football player transferred from Dinamo Zagreb to Celtic for 7 and a half million euros in 2015.

The Croatian center-back performed 1 goal and 1 assist in 16 matches last season. Celtic announced in May that Simunovic’s 1-year option was not used and the roads were separated.

During his five years at Celtic Simunovic started just 70 SPFL matches but he did play in 33 European games.

Celtic have recently been linked with Shane Duffy of Brighton but haven’t yet signed a central defender to replace Simunovic.
