Celtic fans didn’t spare the feelings of former Sky Sports presenter David Tanner as he mused over Steven Fletcher signing a two year contract with Stoke City.
To be fair to Tanner he does operate outwith the BBC bubble, the world of supply and demand where the market decides.
After more than a decade as the well scrubbed shiny face of Scottish football sitting alongside Neil McCann, the bosses at Sky Sports decided on change with Tanner departing the broadcaster.
He got a few calls from BT Sport but that seems to have dried up, his style seems well suited to TalkSPORT but in this day and age many in the media are judged by their Twitter following.
Despite his efforts to impose his character and personality Tanner has just over 10,000 followers on the social media platform. His Sky successor Hayley McQueen is closing in on 400,000 followers.
Fletcher’s people made his interest in Celtic known, the club held discussions but found a younger, better, more suited option. If you like Albian Ajeti is the Hayley McQueen of strikers compared to Fletcher as the David Tanner. Ajeti is younger and far more talented than auld Fletch chasing his last pay-day looking back fondly on the recently departed high earning days.
Celtic and Fletcher will both move on with their decisions, Hibs season ticket holders can enjoy the thoughts, talent and experience of Tanner in the season ahead.
Be fascinating to know the reasons why Steven Fletcher chose Stoke over Celtic.pic.twitter.com/MsJhy5Ooc6

Same reasons as you chose Hibs TV over Sky I’d imagine…

Money and the fact he couldn’t get in the Celtic starting XI. Fletcher will be quietly let go by Stoke at the end of this fruitless season

I thought you knew a bit about football David but obviously not. A player wants to play football and he was never going to be first choice at Celtic so has gone to a club where he will get a game #simples

I’d also be fascinated to know the reason why Sky Sports chose to bump you? Maybe fits into their business model, with a more younger & sellable asset. ??

Quite obvious Tanner we spent 5 million on a mid 20s international striker. What you not getting here. We are glad he’s at Stoke to be honest
