Chris Sutton has overstated the mark by claiming the Celtic fans would ‘burn the ground down’ if Odsonne Edouard is sold.

While it was clearly a throw-away remark made in a Daily Record podcast burning stadiums isn’t really the sort of issue to joke about.

Since scoring a hat-trick against Hamilton Accies on Sunday speculation about the striker has intensified with Celtic having a track record for selling their star players at this time of the year.

Transferring Moussa Dembele and Kieran Tierney brought in £45m while the success on the pitch continued but selling Edouard with a record breaking season just under way might be a risk too far.

Sutton told the Daily Record:

How many times have Celtic had the opportunity to win 10 In A Row and make history? We all know that. Imagine the message it sends out to the support this season if Celtic sell their star man, their biggest player.

Odsonne Edouard is aware of what’s at stake. This shouldn’t be a discussion. It doesn’t matter how much money Celtic are offered for Odsonne Edouard. There’s history on the line here.

We’re not asking him to stay for another seven, eight years. We’re asking him to stay for 12 months. There isn’t a number. It doesn’t matter what’s offered.

The punters would burn the stadium down if Celtic sold Odsonne Edouard and showed that much lack of ambition.

After 10, things may change, and I think we all understand that, we know Celtic are a selling club but you can’t be a selling club with 10 In A Row on the line.

The sale of Dembele at the end of the August 2018 transfer window wasn’t followed by any replacement being brought in, a year ago Boli Bolingoli and Greg Taylor were signed either side of Tierney’s transfer to Arsenal.

This summer it is expected that the transfer market will be greatly depressed but there will always be interest in goal-scorers with Edouard scoring 25 SPFL goals in his last 26 starts.
