The only thing that really matters is Celtic winning matches, the qualifying campaigns of the last two seasons has shown how difficult it can be to reach the group stage of the Champions League.

Tonight, all eyes will be on Djugardens and Ferencvaros to see which side will be in Glasgow next week but if the hoops can make progress there are some favourable signs opening up in the competition.

The champions of Romania and Greece have proved too much to overcome over the last two seasons with Young Boys of Switzerland falling into a similar category.

Astana’s defeat to Dinamo Brest (Belarus) lifts Young Boys into the seeded section of the Third Round draw but the 6-3 win for the Belarus side highlights the dangers at every stage of the competition. The three qualifying rounds are played over one match with the Play Off Round reverting back to two legs.

Moussa Dembele’s Lyon will have the emotional support of Celtic fans tonight against Bayern Munich but if the French side are knocked out, if and it’s a huge if, if Celtic reach the group stage they’ll be in Pot 3 which in theory means a slightly kinder draw with most Pot 4 teams likely to be on the end of a few hidings as they live up to their seedings.
