Celtic’s alleged interest in Ryan Fraser looks to be almost over with the winger expected to complete a move to Newcastle at some stage today.

The former Aberdeen man ran down his contract with Bournemouth and was expected to be one of the most in-demand free agents in the game.

Arsenal and Liverpool had been linked with Fraser a year ago but there wasn’t much interest when his contract expired as Bournemouth were relegated.

Based on odds from Paddy Power on June 28 the Daily Record reported:

The diminutive former Aberdeen academy star has come in for criticism for his decision to depart the Cherries as they fight for the Premier League survival.

But his stance isn’t expected to slow down interest in his services from England and further afield with Celtic being backed with cold, hard cash.

Spokesman Paddy Power said: “Ryan Fraser was wanted by England’s big six last summer, until Bournemouth blocked his exit – meaning he’s basically been on a gap year since.

“Football is a fickle game, and those same clubs appear to now being looking elsewhere, leaving the door wide open for Celtic to land a big signing – albeit not literally, bless him.”

Being a free agent doesn’t make a contract any cheaper for the club with the player involved picking up an above average signing on fee, probably paid annually through the duration of his contract.

Covering his likely move to Newcastle, Chronicle Live reports:

Callum Wilson is looking forward to reuniting with Ryan Fraser at Newcastle United – and believes his former Bournemouth team-mate will be a ‘great addition’ after the pair struck up a deadly partnership together at the Vitality Stadium.

The striker completed his £20m move from the South Coast on Monday and Fraser, a free agent, looks set to follow him through the door.

Fraser is expected to sign a five year contract with Newcastle.
