Steven Gerrard’s plea for new players has been ignored by the Ibrox board.

In just over three years at the club the Liverpool legend has signed 36 players with many like Kyle Lafferty and Eros Grezda bought and sold with minimal impact.

In terms of developing players for profit Josh Windass, Daniel Candeias and Greg Docherty have brought in around £2.5m which would cover the summer fee paid out for Ianis Hagi.

After picking up a couple of injuries against Dundee United 10 days ago Gerrard pleaded for more signings but after dropping points to Hibs in the SPFL it looks like he’ll be playing Willem II with last season’s flops with only Cedric Itten available for the match in Holland.

Gerrard’s credibility is at stake if his squad fail to reach the group stage of the Europa League or challenge Celtic for the title but despite his public pleas no fresh funds have been made available.

After beating Dundee United on September 12 the Ibrox boss Sky Sports:

I’ve been really clear that we need to add so I think we maybe need to try to accelerate that. Going off what I have just seen in the treatment room, there is definitely going to be two, if not three, missing for a couple of weeks. We need to add pretty quickly so that our numbers are OK.

We have lists that we are pursuing but in terms of names and how close we are, it’s a difficult question for me to answer right now.

So far Gerrard has splashed out £11m to sign Itten, Kemar Roofe and Hagi with Jon McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun added to the wage bill.
