‘Lying down to everything’ SPFL chairman challenges Maxwell and Doncaster to stand up to Scottish Government

Rodger Morrison of Peterhead has urged the SFA and SPFL to stand up to the Scottish Government.

Almost every sector of Scottish business life is back in some form but there has been virtually no encouragement or allowances given to the national sport.

Across Europe fans are returning to watch football with 20,000 socially distanced fans in Budapest last night to watch Bayern Munich beat Seville to lift the Super Cup.

After staging two test events watched by 300 fans there will be no spectators inside SPFL grounds this weekend.

Every adverse set of figures seems to be greeted with a resignation that it will further delay the return of fans to matches.

Over the weekend anyone can drink or dine till 10pm, go to the cinema, go to a gym or go shopping but watching an outdoor sports event in a very controlled environment is strictly out of bounds.

It seems that no one on the Joint Response Group is prepared to ask any probing questions of the Government for feat of a further backlash.

Lower division clubs could easily accommodate all of their season ticket holders when their season kicks off in three weeks’ time, the same could be said for Hamilton Accies, Livingston and St Johnstone.

This week the message communicated to football has been that there may be no fans this season with no sign of a challenge from Neil Doncaster or Ian Maxwell.

I do think that it’s about time that common sense prevailed for a while, to start fighting back and not just obey every rule that is coming out.

I really do think that we have got to, especially the SPFL, and the SFA, we’ve got to maybe be fighting back and having an agenda of our own that we can fight back to the Government with. In my mind we are just far too compliant.
