Mark McKenzie has spoken about his ambitions to play in Europe.

Earlier this year Celtic were credited with an interest in the Philadelphia Union defender but the arrival of Shane Duffy appears to have put any move on hold.

McKenzie has an impressive pedigree at club and international level with a move to Europe the next logical step in his career.

Uncertainty about the year ahead has put a hold on much transfer activity during the current window while travel restrictions have kept Lewis Morgan and Jonny Russell out of the Scotland international squad

Speaking to Goal about his ambitions, McKenzie said:

The dream, of course, is to play in Europe. That is the ultimate goal but I’m here at Union at the moment and I’m focused on helping the club in any way I can.

But if there is an opportunity, I’m ready and I’m prepared to take the next step. I’m confident that I can take such an opportunity with both hands. However, I’m focusing on my game right now and help win a title this year.

Personally, no (the rumours do not affect me). I try and filter out as much as I can. There is a lot of stuff that goes on in the industry. I can only control my game and everything I can do.

I can’t control rumours nor am I interested in them. The important thing is performing day in and day out. That is most important. If I do not perform, no opportunity will materialise. It is all about me working and improving day in and day out. Everything else will follow.

Having made his full international debut earlier this year Celtic would be hopeful of getting a work permit if they decided to sign McKenzie.

Kris Ajer is still being linked with a move to AC Milan, if that was to happen Neil Lennon would be looking to bring in a defender having earlier this year released Jozo Simunovic.
