Hugh Burns has let go of almost 40 years of hurt by calling Graeme Souness out as a dick on a radio show.

In the mid eighties the kid from Larkhall was one of the bright young things at Ibrox but his progress came to a shuddering halt when the Liverpool legend took charge.

Being a ‘right good blue-nose’ was no longer enough under the new regime with Burns punted to Hearts and onto a downward spiral that included Dunfermline, Kilmarnock and Ayr United before finishing up at Larkhall Thistle.

Well into his sixties Souness likes to think of himself as stylish but his appearance on Sky Sports on Sunday seemed to upset Burns.

The Sun reports:

The pundit was discussing plimsoll shoes on the Talking Football Show when he interrupted host Bill Young and fellow guest Gordon Young to take aim at his former Ibrox gaffer.

Burns said: “I have got to say something. I was watching Sky last night and Souness had a pair (of ‘sandshoes’) on. He’s not my favourite person anyway but he looked like a right topper.”

Young replied: “What have you got against him?”

Burns continued: “Because he’s a dick. He’s a right trumpet sitting there (adopts Souness impression) ‘That’s for sure.’ All the gear on with a pair of sannies. Some of us can still carry it but not him. He thinks he’s still 40 that diddy.”

With little sign of irony Souness described the injury inflicted on Virgil van Dijk by Jordan Pickford as an assault.
