Chris Jullien is facing a lengthy spell on the side-lines with inflammation on the base of his spine.

A year ago he was one of the heroes of Celtic’s back-to-back wins over Lazio in the Europa League but he seems certain to miss the first three matches at least of this season’s group which starts tomorrow night at home to AC Milan.

Jullien’s last appearance was on September 12 away to Ross County, after a three match absence he was listed as a substitute against Sarajevo and St Johnstone but dropped out of contention for the derby match.

His absence leaves a place in the side for Stephen Welsh although with AC Milan at the top of Serie A Neil Lennon might want to switch formation to a back four.

Despite the nature of Saturday’s defeat Lennon doesn’t have much leeway to make changes for tomorrow night’s European tie.

Other than a switch of strikers there isn’t much experienced back-up to call on with Tony Ralston and Ewan Henderson- without a minute of competitive action this season- on the bench for the Derby defeat.
