Celtic’s Social Media team’s decision to pally up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic didn’t meet with universal approval from supporters.
Publishing a picture of the AC Milan icon with Henrik Larsson, Celtic’s Twitter account dropped a hint that there would be no room for another Swedish legend at the club.
Ibrahimovic has 10 times more followers on Twitter which suggests that he won’t be overly concerned about a light-hearted comment looking to draw a response or attention.
While it’s good that a game at Celtic Park is on the Bucket List for most of the top names in the game there is something a little uncomfortable when the club goes all dewy-eyed at the appearance of an iconic name in the east end of the city.
Big name clubs show respect but nothing else, Zlatan and AC Milan are opponents wanting to beat Celtic and inflict pain on the players and support, not honoured guests for a Testimonial or Charity match.
Back in 2001 when he was setting out in the game Ibrahimovic was part of the Ajax side that lost out to Celtic as they claimed their first ever place in the Champions League.
Despite losing 1-0 on the night it was an evening of passion, tension and celebration as the home fans finally got the chance to see their club in action at the top level of the modern game.
Martin O’Neill’s side didn’t drool over any visitors- Porto, Juventus and Rosenborg left on the wrong end of results with many more following them. Memorably in 2003 Bayern Munich celebrated a 0-0 draw like a victory, as it should be with the sporting thanks left until after the final whistle.
Sorry @Ibra_official, we’ve already got our King of Kings! ?? pic.twitter.com/0E86dPhKOs
