Edinburgh MP calls for Glasgow derby to be postponed

Ian Murray has called on the First Minister for Scotland to postpone tomorrow’s Glasgow derby.

The life-long Hearts fan is the only Labour MP left in Scotland, representing the wealthy Edinburgh South constituency.

Last Friday pubs and restaurants serving alcohol were closed down in five areas across central Scotland including Glasgow and Edinburgh.

That has created a media frenzy including the far-fetched notion that bus loads of supporters will travel to Blackpool to watch a football match that can easily be accessed on their phone, tablet or television.

Murray is never known to miss an opportunity to curry favour in his constituency, today he told the Daily Record:

It is extraordinary that the football match, regardless of what kind of football match or any sporting event or cultural event for that matter, is a threat to public health it should be postponed.

Rather than the First Minister saying that she’s concerned that it might spread the virus and she is concerned that and it might tempt people to breach the strict rules that are in place, particularly across the central belt with households mixing and people moving around. If that is the case, then surely postponement is the way to do this.

In two weeks’ time Hearts face Hibs in a Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden with the match being shown live on BBC Scotland. That match is almost certain to be played in front of an empty stadium at Hampden.
