Chris Sutton found himself out of step with the Celtic support when he referenced Celtic Reserves in the aftermath of yesterday’s Derby defeat. It wasn’t a line of defence that fans were interested in.
Appearing with Robbie Savage on BBC 5 Live the former hoops striker heard direct what the fans thought of the derby defeat and it wasn’t the missing players that was causing concern.
Lifeless, lacking desire/spirit/fight/determination are serious accusations to throw at professional sportsmen but it was unavoidable after yesterday’s display.
Sutton is obviously tied to his friend Neil Lennon but not blindly, the feedback that he got would be at odds with the standards that were shared in the dressing room under Martin O’Neill.
It wasn’t all sweetness and light under O’Neill, his last season was a horrible slow car crash but perhaps there were mitigating circumstances at play.
After nine successive titles, 11 trophies on the bounce there are no excuses around this season but the early season performances have been flat with many concerns realised on Derby Day.
There has been worse performances in the past, both games at Ibrox in 2018/19 come to mind but from a position of strength yesterday’s offering was very very concerning, more concerningly there is little sign that those concerns are acknowledged within the club.
Celtic fan “Worst Celtic I’ve performance ever seen” Is he right??? https://t.co/t3xv3nJ0RZ

100% correct and you used to slaughter Deila who is far and away a better coach then your pal Lennon

They’ve stopped playing for the manager. And the manager comes across as disengaged.

It’s the kind of performance you get when there’s something rotten going on behind the scenes.

Can’t think of a worse performance in the derby – no shot on target? Too late with the subs again, Griffiths at least should’ve been on at half-time. Too pedestrian in the middle of the park. People, including you Chris, need to stop being sentimental about Lennon & face facts

It was the worst and most inept Celtic performance since the cup semi final before Rodgers came in. No ambition, no creativity and no lack of cheating the supporters. Just as well the stadium was empty

I’m really struggling to think of a worse performance. The lack of fight and passion was frightening. Obvious something isn’t right. Some players aren’t interested, that’s not acceptable.

Worst performance I’ve ever seen,we’ve always made them work for a result, score a goal or at the very least work the keeper, that today was an embarrassment, I’ve sen 4-1,, 5,1,4-2, seen them batter us in the past, never seen us never work the keeper, absolute embarrassment

We haven’t been playing good for weeks, getting the points, today was abysmal, team selection, individuals not turning up,rangers have got their tactics right the last three games against us,as much as it pains me to say that, and our first shot on target was in the 81st minute,

That’s the worst case scenario as they won’t mess around with the CL money meanwhile we’ve hole’s all over the squad. Does McGregor stay do we finally replace an aging Brown. Nightmare stuff.
