After spending the last six months telling everyone how they are too big and good to be playing in The Championship Hearts were dumped out of the Betfred Cup at Alloa today.

Peter Grant’s part-timers proved a tough nut to crack for the Jambos with Alan Trouten scoring a penalty kick in extra-time to decide the tie.

In midweek Hearts beat Alloa 3-0 at Tynecastle in the Championship but there was no chance of a repeat with the part-times able to prepare properly and bring their celebrated visitors down to earth with a bump.

Andy Halliday took a break from media commitments before getting the hook after 81 ineffective minutes, just past the hour Steven Naismith came off the bench to replac Liam Boyce. Alloa have one point from their first five Championship matches.

After winning their four sectional matches in the Betfred Cup and three Championship matches Hearts have now lost to Dunfermline and Alloa in the space of nine days.

Next Saturday Hearts are away to Morton in The Championship with the Scottish Cup Final with Celtic looming on December 20.
