Tony Hamilton has explained the sarcastic ‘put the kettle on’ tweet that he sent to Chris McLaughlin as the BBC reported on protests outside Celtic Park following the Betfred Cup defeat from Ross County.

The Celtic Charity chief revealed that he thought that he had sent a private message on WhatsApp before discovering that his message had been picked up by thousands of Celtic fans on Twitter. His reply was then deleted.

Whether that explanation paints him in a better light is debatable but it does highlight the thoughts of a club employee in what he thought was a private comment.

Hamilton is a long time Celtic employee, working his way up from being the Stadium Announcer through to working in the clubs’ media services onto the Celtic Foundation.

During his time with Celtic TV, the View and the club website he would have been in contact with McLaughlin as he rose through the ranks at BBC Scotland.

Despite the apology/explanation almost 24 hours after the rogue message it doesn’t help matters with tensions high among supporters with the club keeping communication to a bare minimum.
