Mike Trusson could probably have walked along the Gallowgate and taken a seat in the North Stand at Celtic Park completely un-noticed last season.

The 61-year-old was part of the European scouting network set up by Nicky Hammond but today was revealed as the new assistant manager of Sheffield Wednesday.

It seems that Trusson, who spent most of his playing days at Sheffield United and Rotherham, is a trusted friend of Tony Pulis who has just taken charge at Hillsborough.

Trusson told the Sheffield Wednesday website:

I was working as a European scout for Celtic and I was enjoying that but when you get this opportunity at such a great, historical club like Sheffield Wednesday, it was a no-brainer.

The one thing that strikes me is there’s a lot of quality in the squad. Our challenge is to bring that quality out, make the players better and start getting results.

Since Hammond took charge in the summer of 2019 Celtic’s transfer focus has switched towards the English market but scouting can also include watching future European opponents.

Like almost every aspect of the game Lockdown has had a massive impact on scouting with the days of taking in five or six matches over one weekend now a thing of the past.

Online scouting and analysis has come to the fore but regardless of so-called advances nothing produces better results than an experienced eye at a match following the whole game or watching a potential signing target off the ball as closely as when they are involved.
