Johan Mjallby has dismissed the claim that Neil Lennon is a tactical dinosaur as Celtic fans search for reasons for their team’s poor start to the season.

In January the return of Leigh Griffiths saw Celtic switch to a 3-5-2 formation that rattled off 28 points out of 30 in the SPFL as well as reach the last four of the Scottish Cup.

Absences in defence and attack have caused havoc this season with Lennon switching formations to try and find a winning formula.

Celtic started the season playing 4-2-3-1 but with the team struggling for form and results Lennon has tried 3-5-2 but has recently reverted back to 4-2-3-1.

Mjallby was alongside throughout his first spell at the club and defended his old colleague on the Celtic Huddle Podcast:

I think he works more tactically now than he used to. He knows that today’s generation really need to be pinpointed what to do.

They don’t want any responsibility. That’s not a criticism, that’s just the way it is. They need to be told exactly what to do.

I think it is something that is a bit new to Neil [Lennon] but he learns and takes it on. He’s certainly not a dinosaur. The years I spent with him, he was spot on tactically.

He had a lot of great ideas that he didn’t always use, but was great during games to pinpoint whether things needed to change defensively or attacking wise.

Lennon will be watching and listening anxiously over the next 10 days with many of his squad in three international matches.
