If Scotland are playing it’s almost certain that Oli McBurnie will be trending on Twitter.

Yesterday in Slovakia the Sheffield United man was brought in to replace Lyndon Dykes and turned in the sort of performance that you’d expect from a competition winner.

With no goals from his previous 13 appearances it seemed that his team-mates were going out of their way to tee McBurnie up for that breakthrough first International goal.

Ryan Christie and Stuart Armstrong created early chances for McBurnie but he barely tested the Slovak keeper with efforts that smacked of desperation. When Liam Palmer fired in an inviting cross the sole Scotland striker was unable to get off the ground as he headed into the keeper’s arms.

Leigh Griffiths was sent on halfway through the second half to spark things up with the Celtic striker looking lively and alert compared to his strike partner.

All manager’s have a blind spot, Steve Clarke has been showered with praise over the last week but the dwindling number of apologists for McBurnie are starting to slither away as the evidence mounts with Dykes, Griffiths and Lawrence Shankland offering alternatives to the Scotland boss.
