Amir Rrahmani has claimed that he turned down a move to Celtic.

The 26-year-old central defender moved from Hellas Verona to Napoli for £12m in January but remained on loan at Verona for the remainder of the season.

Rrahmani was viewed as the successor to Kalidou Koulibaly but his expected move to England during the summer failed to materialise with Rrahmani on the sidelines at Napoli.

During the summer there was renewed speculation linking Celtic with Italian based players such as Omar Colley of Sampdoria with Diego Laxalt signing on loan from AC Milan on deadline day.

Discussing his own situation, Rrahmani told The Sun:

Napoli have invested a lot in me. I had offers from Celtic and Standard Liege but in the end I chose to sign for Napoli. This is the most important step of my career.

They had a strategy to sell Koulibaly but the virus changed the scenario. I’ve been told that I’m still an important member of the squad and that my time will come soon.

During the summer Celtic lost Jozo Simunovic from their defence with Shane Duffy brought in on a season long loan.

With Kris Ajer out of contract in June 2022 major surgery is likely next summer, in most circumstances signing a player from Napoli would seem unlikely but the Laxalt loan suggests that deals can be made.
