Scot Gemmill has finally called Stephen Welsh up into the Scotland u-21 squad for the European Championship qualifiers against Croatia and Greece.

The Celtic defender now has 48 hours to prepare for Thursday’s match against Croatia at Tynecastle after being left out of the original squad.

When the squad was announced there was no place for Welsh who had just started for Celtic in the Glasgow derby and played 45 minutes against an AC Milan side that included Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

It seemed that Gemmill preferred players with limited experience in the Scottish Championship or obscure English based players.

Welsh collected 13 caps at u-19 level with the bulk of them playing alongside Robbie Deas and Daniel Church over two campaigns.

No one else in the squad has any experience of playing in the Europa League with the young Celt putting in an assured performance for the final 15 minutes of the 2-2 draw away to Lille as he shored up the hoops defence.
