Brian McNally has enjoyed a unique view of Celtic for more decades than he would admit to. Last night didn’t make for comfortable viewing even if the last 11 domestic trophies have been secured with Hearts standing in the way of a 12th.

From the North East of England, McNally had an inside track on the dramas and traumas of Newcastle United for the Sunday Mirror but his only footballing passion is Celtic.

What promised to be a season of glory hasn’t unravelled, it has fallen apart in less than a dozen SPFL matches with the fans watching on in horror at three consecutive home defeats.

In the Glasgow derby Celtic lost two goals, when AC Milan visited it was three with Sparta Prague not flattered last night by four goals.

From the boardroom through the dug-out to the dressing room nothing is functioning at Celtic. The only hope for fans is that Dermot Desmond intervenes but into November he hasn’t been spotted at a game this season. In his only media interview this year the Irish businessman claimed that the current squad was superior to the one that reached the 2003 UEFA Cup Final in Seville.

The Champions League pay day has been lost, the second-rate Europa League is also now a right-off. The SPFL is still possible but it is a fragile hope this morning, by Sunday the deficit could be double figures making the prospects for a new manager bleaker than last night’s shameless, spineless surrender.
