As a player Graham Coughlan never made it any higher than Plymouth, Livingston and Shrewsbury.

In management he got sacked by Mansfield last month after a disastrous run of four wins in 27 matches after taking charge of the League Two side just before Christmas.

With that sort of pedigree who else could Gareth Southgate turn to for alternative options with Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold?

The England boss has dozens of alternatives playing every week at the highest level but Coughlan reckons that Southgate should turn to Ibrox to raise the bar in his defence.

Incredibly James Tavernier and Connor Goldson have been overlooked by the England set-up with the Ibrox duo not even having a youth team cap to their name.

After a few wins over SPFL roll-overs Tav and Goldie were found out against Benfica as they chucked away a two goal lead against 10 men but despite that set back Coughlan believes that the Ibrox stars should be rewarded by having Three Lions on their chest.

The sacked former Mansfield supremo told the Daily Record:

Why does the whole of Europe tune in to the Old Firm games? Because it fascinates them. And you need quality to play in it. Connor is fully deserving of where he is after his work and dedication. It’s an absolute fairytale, an unbelievable story.

And if the Scottish game was viewed differently in England then both Connor and James would be up for England call-ups. For any full-back to be in double figures for goals after three months of the season is an unbelievable achievement.

Yes, the knockers will say there’s a number of penalties but you’ve got to convert them but it’s not only his goals – he’s playing well. And when you’re hot you deserve to reap the rewards. It won’t be long before Southgate takes Rangers and Celtic seriously.

The whole of Britain doesn’t tune in fascinated to the Glasgow derby, except for a few Irish pubs no one else in Europe bothers about the fixture, it has less appeal across Europe than any of the Istanbul derby matches.

In March Tav told readers of the Ibrox match programme that their squad couldn’t handle matches that they were expected to win, that night Hamilton won 1-0 at Ibrox from a Goldson mistake. Allan McGregor went beserk at the England prospect.

With his own judgements it won’t be long before Barcelona are taking Coughlan seriously having worked with Goldson when he was a Shrewsbury starlet.

With their Ibrox deals expiring in June 2022 now is the time to get the international Likely Lads tied into new long term contracts.
