Some vintage footage of mid-sixties Celtic Park emerged on-line last night.

Although the caption says Celtic Park 1972 the clip that follows is from the 1966 pre-season friendly against Manchester United.

After a highly successful tour of the United States on the back of their first title win in more than a decade the appetite of the Celtic support was high to welcome back Jock Stein’s side.

The visitors included Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles who had just won the World Cup, as the teams walked out in front of the newly constructed Jungle no one could have imagined that they were about to witness the next two winners of the European Cup.

As pre-season friendlies go this one had it all. The return of Paddy Crerand plus the chance to watch Jimmy Johnstone and George Best on the same pitch.

Celtic won the match 4-1, Nantes, Zurich, Vojvodina and Dukla Prague also came out second best at Celtic Park as Stein’s side wrote the greatest chapter in the club’s history.
