With three goals in a week- plus a vital penalty shoot-out counter- Leigh Griffiths has put some substance into his pleas to be given more time on the pitch.

The striker has been on the sidelines for most of the season but after just one start by the middle of December he has started and scored in successive matches as Celtic edged back towards the sort of form that drove them to last season’s title success.

Griffiths and Neil Lennon go back almost seven years but their public comments in recent times have shown a clear difference of opinions without any sign of a falling out.

The striker and manager are both strong characters but if Celtic are producing results on the park both men will feel that they are proving their point.

He told the Daily Record:

The more I get on the pitch, the fitter I’m going to become. The gaffer knows what I can do, it’s just about trying to get that consistency going again, especially the linking up with Odsonne.

You saw how good it was at the back end of last season and hopefully we can try to rediscover that now. The performances are coming together now. We look more assured and we can take that forward.

Celtic have two more matches before they enjoy a mini-break of nine days off without a fixture, if they win their next two matches Griffiths and Lennon will be on course to salvage a season that looked close to disaster just a few weeks ago.
