Alan Nixon has claimed that Martin O’Neill, Steve Clarke and Paul Lambert are under consideration if Celtic decide to replace Neil Lennon as manager.

The three men have very contrasting records with O’Neill currently out of management, Clarke preparing Scotland for the European Championship finals next summer and Lambert in charge of Ipswich who are on a run of two wins in nine matches.

Lennon was given a Vote of Confidence by the Celtic board in midweek but it did contain the line that the situation would be reviewed in the new year.

Partick Thistle fan Nixon is based in the north-west of England with strong connections to a number of agents, in June he broke the news that Gavin Strachan was about to join the Celtic coaching staff.

Leading with O’Neill in The Sun, Nixon reveals:

O’Neill has sounded out a couple of agents about finding him a club as he itches for a new challenge. The Irishman would ideally like to work in England but Celtic will be in the market for a boss in the new year if results do not improve. O’Neill is a legend there after his first spell, though he would need a new coaching team this time.

The Glasgow giants have also considered Steve Clarke — but Scotland making the Euros means it will be difficult for him to move before then. Hoops’ feelers have gone out about Paul Lambert, however, he is in contract at Ipswich.

Lennon remains in charge of Celtic with his case helped by Thursday’s Europa League win over Lille.

After a run of two wins in 12 matches left Celtic out of three competitions he knows that patience has been stretched with any further points lost in the SPFL bound to renew calls from fans for a change.
