Over the top- Lawwell hits back at Social Media attacks

Peter Lawwell has described Social Media criticism of Celtic as ‘a wee bit over the top’.

The Celtic CEO doesn’t have any known Social Media accounts so it has to be presumed he has someone in the club feeding views back to him.

Lawwell was speaking at Celtic’s AGM with the club having lost five times at home this season. For the third year running they failed to reach the group phase of the Champions League with Ferencvaros joining Cluj and AEK Athens as unseeded clubs ending Celtic’s hopes of a £30m jackpot and massive hike in profile.

A run of four successive home defeats was the worst since the fifties under Jimmy McGrory and Robert Kelly.

Picking up on his pre-recorded interview at the company AGM, the Daily Record reports Lawwell saying:

What we’re seeing here in today’s world and the social media world, you’re seeing accusations that the board are holding the fans in contempt, suggesting that they’re entitled.

It can get a wee bit over the top. What I must say is the support we’ve had over the summer, our supporters’ commitment to this club has been inspiring, nothing short of remarkable.

On November 30, on the back of a defeat from Ross County in the Betfred Cup, Keith Jackson of the Daily Record quoted a source close to Dermot Desmond saying:

Neil knows he can’t go on losing games indefinitely but he will also not be thrown to the wolves just because of the demands of a bunch of fans with an enormous sense of entitlement.

The Daily Record continues to be invited to Celtic media conferences.
