Celtic look set to recoup the £1.6m fee that they paid out for Hatem Abd Elhamed with the defender ready to return to Israel.

Earlier this month The Sun revealed that the defender was looking to quit Celtic in order to be reunited with his family who moved back to Israel earlier this year.

Despite signing a four year contract last summer Celtic are facilitating the move with Hapoel Be’er Sheva at the front of the queue to sign the 29-year-old.

The Sun reports:

HAPOEL BE’ER SHEVA are set to make the first move for homesick Celtic star Hatem Abd Elhamed. The Israeli side are one of four clubs who want to sign the versatile defender in January.

Elhamed, 29, moved to Celtic from Be’er Sheva last summer and retains close links with the club. Alona Barkat, Hapoel’s female owner, could even bankroll the move personally as the Hoops look to recoup their £1.6million transfer fee.

Elhamed has played at right-back and also in a back three since he moved to Celtic in July 2019.

A groin injury picked up away to Lazio last November brought his progress to a halt with just one substitute appearance made before Lockdown.

With Kris Ajer redeployed to right-back and Jeremie Frimpong available in that position or further forward Celtic are well covered at the moment but are likely to have to strengthen that position in the summer.
