Celtic fans weren’t slow to remind Tom English of some far more important stats than the one he dredged up this afternoon.

The chief Sports Writer at BBC Scotland was apparently covering today’s Hampden action between St Mirren and Livingston when he decided to tweet out a comparison of goals scored between Connor Goldson and Odsonne Edouard.

As most fans know statistics can be manipulated to suit any purpose you wish, usually by losers to try and justify results not going their way.

How English defines ‘in play’ is open to interpretation, goals scored from the penalty spot are as in-play as any other type of goal. For Tom’s benefit Soccerbase credits Edouard with 12 goals this season while Goldson has scored seven. Edouard’s does include one goal described as disrespectful by English’s BBC colleague Neil McCann.

Twice this season Edouard has had to self-isolate, on one occasion after testing positive. Only someone particularly desperate for attention would want to take advantage of that.

As mentioned earlier stats can be made to prove anything, by March 1 rookie manager’s Callum Davidson or Dave Martindale will have won more senior trophies as a manager than the much celebrated Steven Gerrard.
