Lennon left in the dark about Celtic’s transfer plan

Neil Lennon has no idea whether Celtic will be able to spend on players before the transfer window closes.

During the summer Celtic spent £13m on three players plus the associated costs of bringing in Shane Duffy, Diego Laxalt and Moi Elyounoussi.

After failing to reach the group stage of the Champions League and the likelihood of having no fans inside the ground all season Celtic could have been looking at a loss of around £20m before the sale of Jeremie Frimpong.

Even though Manchester City are due 30% of the £11m fee that transfer will go a long way to balancing the books with no guarantee that any of it will be used to strengthen the squad that is 23 points behind in the SPFL Premiership.

Asked about bringing players in during the remaining days of the transfer window Lennon told BBC Scotland:

I don’t know. I’ll speak to Peter tomorrow. We’ve not been immune to the pandemic financially. We felt it was good business and the timing of the deal was right for the club.

Whether we get to spend, we’ll see. There may be options coming up over the next few days that we don’t expect, but we are looking at one or two players to bring in.

With the three loan signings returning to their clubs and Odsonne Edouard, Kris Ajer, Olivier Ntcham and Ryan Christie out of contract in June 2022 a major rebuild is expected this summer.
