Martin O’Neill is the bookies favourite as the next permanent manager of Celtic with Betfair pricing the former hoops boss at just 5/4 to replace Neil Lennon.

Despite the apparent backing of Dermot Desmond it seems unlikely that Lennon will survive into next season as Celtic boss after a disastrous 2020 that saw the hoops knocked out of three cup competitions before the end of November and currently 19 points behind in the SPFL Premiership.

O’Neill has been out of management since a five month spell at Nottingham Forest in 2019 where his record was Won 8, Drew 3, Lost 8 following a spell in charge of Ireland that peaked with reaching the last 16 at Euro 2016.

Eddie Howe 21/10, Jack Ross 10/3 and Slaven Bilic 15/2 are followed by a predictable list of Roy Keane, Henrik Larsson, John Kennedy and Johan Mjallby as the bookie covers all options extending all the way to Craig Burley and Kenny Dalglish at 100/1.

With the exception of Ronny Deila the appointments of Celtic managers have generally fallen into the ex-player or Irish connection with Gordon Strachan slightly wild-card although being out of work with EPL experience put him in the frame when he succeeded Martin O’Neill in May 2005.

The management markets aren’t taken too seriously by bookies as they scan through the obvious names, throw in a few wild cards like Ally McCoist 80/1, Arsene Wenger 33/1 knowing that as soon as any significant money comes in bets go on hold with the market suspended with one candidate heavily odds on.
