Kris Commons has slammed Peter Lawwell’s £35m spending spree that has left Celtic’s title hopes in tatters within a week of 2021.

This year could have been monumental for the club- deliver a 10th title on the back of a massive financial advantage and dine out on it for decades to come.

During October and November the team fell apart, four consecutive home defeats around a disastrous Europa League campaign should have brought about change but the club literally put up the barricades and urged fans to continue to back their judgement.

Asked in a pre-recorded interview at the club AGM about falling asleep at the wheel Peter Lawwell pointed to spending £35m without selling any top players sine July 2019, perhaps he had forgotten about the transfer of Kieran Tierney.

At Ibrox on Saturday there was little evidence of elti’s investment on the pith with ommons scathing in his assessment.

Covering his column in the Daily Mail, the Daily Record reports Commons saying:

I fully understand the club will want to make a statement this month and try to freshen up the squad but the damage is already done. The league title has gone and I would be very wary of the club now resorting to more last-minute panic buys.

That’s what they’ve done far too often in the past. The recruitment has been absolutely shambolic at Celtic Park for years now. That’s what happened with Shane Duffy last summer. He was a panic buy intended to appease angry supporters after the disastrous Champions League exit to Ferencvaros.

Now he can’t even get a game. You’ve got Nir Bitton, a midfielder by trade, playing ahead of him at centre-back. As we saw on Saturday, that’s just not the answer. Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas are another two signings who just plainly don’t look up to scratch. Celtic spent a combined £10million on both of them

That’s been the problem for far too long. It’s these short-term, short-sighted panic buys the board keep going for to save face and be able to say they are spending money. Nobody is doubting Celtic have spent money. It’s how they’ve spent it that’s been the problem. They’ve thrown millions of pounds down a drain.

The Celtic squad is currently in Dubai for a week long training break.
